Steps

  1. Grandma's Slow Cooker Swiss Steak Recipe
  2. ----------------------------------------
  3. Ingredients
  4. ------------
  5. * 1 lb flank steak
  6. * 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  7. * 1 onion, chopped
  8. * 4 cloves garlic, minced
  9. * 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  10. * 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  11. * 2 cups sliced mushrooms
  12. * 1 cup beef broth
  13. * 1 tsp dried thyme
  14. * Salt and pepper to taste
  15. * 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  16. Instructions
  17. ------------
  18. ### Step 1: Prepare the meat
  19. Trim any excess fat from the flank steak, then season both sides with salt and pepper.
  20. ### Step 2: Sauté the vegetables
  21. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the vegetable oil and sauté the onion, garlic, green bell pepper, red bell pepper, and mushrooms for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are tender.
  22. ### Step 3: Add the steak
  23. Place the flank steak into the skillet with the vegetables and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the steak and vegetables from the skillet and set aside.
  24. ### Step 4: Combine the sauce
  25. In a separate saucepan, combine the beef broth, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 5-10 minutes until reduced.
  26. ### Step 5: Transfer to the slow cooker
  27. Transfer the flank steak and vegetables back into the skillet, then pour the beef broth sauce all over it. Make sure everything is coated evenly.
  28. ### Step 6: Cook in the slow cooker
  29. Cover and cook on low for about 8-10 hours or high for 4-6 hours until the flank steak is tender and falls apart easily with a fork. If desired, top with shredded cheddar cheese during the last 30 minutes of cooking for an extra cheesy flavor.
  30. ### Step 7: Serve and enjoy!
  31. Remove the slow cooker Swiss steak from the pot and let it rest for about 5-10 minutes before slicing. Serve with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes or rice, and enjoy this delicious comfort food!
