  1. To prepare a traditional steak tartare recipe, you'll first need to prepare the steak. Cut your steak into 1/4-inch thick slices. Place the slices in the bottom of an oven-proof skillet. Heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the sliced steak to the skillet and cook, turning occasionally, until it's browned on all sides, about 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside to rest. In the meantime, mix the mayonnaise, horseradish, mustard, and salt and pepper to taste. Toss the ingredients together until they're evenly coated.
