  1. To prepare a summer fruit shortcake recipe, first preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Sift the flour, baking powder, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt into the bowl of an electric mixer. Add the butter and mix on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Gradually add the milk, beating until just combined. Fold in the vanilla. Spoon the batter into an ungreased 8-inch round cake pan.
